I got first non-mod post! FUCK SOCIETY! YEAH! So I thought I'd start it off with a nice positive review:
This album isn't actually that bad. I heard "Pull Me Under" and bought the album on a whim. This is only my second DT album after Train Of Thought, which is actually decent.
1. Pull Me Under
This song is great. I was blown away the first time I heard it and it's one of the few DT songs that I'd care if I never heard again (the others being Endless Sacrifice, The Root Of All Evil and Strange Deja Vu)
2. Another day
This is truly dreadful. Honestly, you hear whatshisface from Opeth complaining about how commercial metalcore bands sound (not that I'm sticking up for metalcore) and then a prog metal band wrote this!? Fuck, it wouldn't sound out of place on a Westlife album.
3. Take The Time
This is the worst attempt at funk I've ever heard. Myung tries to do slap bass but fails because he has no soul.
4. Surrounded
...And it's back to sounding like Westlife again. The piano is completely overdone and cheesy and the lyrics are clichéd.
5. Metropolis Part 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper
Despite the unbelievably pretentious title, this song is actually pretty good. Myung's bass solo is rather impressive.
6. Under A Glass Moon
Actually a pretty good song despite Portnoy's complete inability to make his drum beat to fit in with the song. LaBrie frequently has the same problem with vocal riffs. Never thought I'd say this but LaBrie gives a great vocal performance.
7. Waiting For Sleep
The worst song yet. Why do they bother putting this sort of song (Vacant is another example) on their albums? No one bothers to listen to them, ever! Skip to the next song. If you bother to listen to this the whole way through you'll feel terribly ripped off and decide to kill yourself.
8. Learning To Live
Not a bad song, despite the Latin-sounding jam at the end.
So there we have it. All I can say for this album is at least James LaBrie doesn't sound like shit. And at least Portnoy doesn't try and sing.
